The Eyebank

People have always been fascinated with eyeballs. The most famous line from A Christmas Story is "You'll shoot your eye out!" It seems that losing an eye has become quite trendy these days. Eye-gouging has occurred in many things I've watched in the last couple of years, however I think the "implied eye-gouge" is worse than the actual. When Tom Cruise got his eyes switched out in Minority Report my stomach was queasy for hours. And don't forget about the dreaded "Evil Eye."  The Evil Eye has been one of the most potent superstitions throughout ancient and medieval cultures, and is very much alive today. During the historical witch-hunting period, hundreds of women were burned for no reason other than an accusation that they had cast Evil Eyes at someone. In many cultures, even today, the envious gaze of a stranger is believed to bring all sorts of misfortune to the innocent, particularly children. There is a new fad crawling its way across Europe. In the Netherlands people are now going on waiting lists with hopes of some day getting Eye Jewelry implanted into their eyeballs. For between $600 and $1,200 you too can sport your very own Eye Jewelry. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. You can get anything from a circular jewel to a half moon inserted into your conjunctiva, otherwise known as the mucous membrane lining the surface of the front of your eyeball. You will not find any eyeball jewelry sold here, but please take a look at our other Ghastly Eyeball Goodies.
